Ravndal Industrial District

Noah moved slowly. He’d been taught to do that but it was still hard to remember not to rush. Time wasn’t a factor, after all. He slowly moved down the stairs to the common room, stopping halfway down to scan for Erik.

It was much better than going all the way down there and wandering through the frozen crowd, displacing the air as he walked. He could see no sign of Erik. He started to rush down the stairs, eager to find him on the streets before he got away but he caught himself again with a wry grin.

He was still quite new to this. Erik’s not going anywhere right now, he reminded himself. He slowed again and walked out the front door, leaving it not quite closed. The sound of the latch opening would still be loud but shutting the door would sound like a massive slam when he returned to normal time.

He looked up and down the street but didn’t see Erik. He could at least be glad there was no rain. The last thing he needed was for shattering raindrops to give him away.

On a hunch, he turned in the direction of the smithing shops where Halfdan had seen Siggi. If Erik was going to report in to Skoll, it was probably in that direction. If he was going to report to someone else, then it was time to leave that flea-infested shithole and start again.

He didn’t need to go far to catch up. It had only been a few minutes since they’d talked to Erik in real time. Noah rounded the third corner on what he figured was the shortest route to the smithing area and he spotted a man in a dark cloak.

He walked past him, keeping far enough away to prevent the disturbance of the air from physically affecting his quarry. He still felt a bit uneasy moving around like this.

He’d had it explained to him by Kusha, how the will that he showed in stepping out of time was able to let him use oxygen in the same way he always did. He couldn’t shake the feeling that her people didn’t really understand either, that they’d just come up with a comfortable explanation.

Whatever, he thought, it works.

He confirmed that it was Erik and passed him again, slipping into the end of a dark alleyway. He let go of his hold on time, feeling the muted thunder. I think that was better.

Erik looked up at the sky as he walked, pulling up his hood in anticipation of another rainy season deluge. Noah waited till the man rounded the next corner, not wanting to find out he was the twitchy type who liked to glance behind himself just as Noah was stepping out of the alley.

He emerged and slow-timed his way forward. He was about to peer around the corner when he realized he could hear the echo of his feet off the building across the corner from him.

It sounded normal enough to him
